Mrs. Lucy Georgia Lane,
We take today as an opportunity to say a big thank you for all that she has done to support the leprosy mission. We pay our respects to her father Rev. James Mackenzie, the founder of this Ministry and for bringing the gospel into Korea during a time of darkness.

It was 96 years ago in 1918 that Lucy was born in Korea, a land which at the time, was full of idols, poverty and corruption. She lived in Busan until the age of 18. It was a blessing, in itself, that her family were able to live in our country for that amount of time.

Upon reflection, we try to understand the many challenges Lucy would have faced living as a Missionary child in a foreign environment and working hand in hand with people suffering leprosy. The Mackenzie family specifically chose to support a minority group in need who were turned away by their own people.

So just like we remember the works of Lucy¡¯s father Rev. James Mackenzie, we continue to associate her name in our memories.

It remains fascinating the difficulties Lucy and her sisters Helen and Cathy would have experienced during the foundation of the Busan Ilshin Hospital.

We are grateful that four years ago, in the centenary of Rev. Mackenzie ministry in Korea, Lucy was able to take the opportunity to visit Busan. A city that she considered her hometown.

Arriving at Seoul Incheon Airport, Lucy was excited to meet old friends. Unfortunately due an accident at the airport, she was rushed to Severance Hospital in Seoul. Without a complaint, lying in hospital, she would recall fond memories of times spent as a teenager in Busan with great love and expression.

I also remember she loved humming along to the Korean hymn, ¡°The time we will meet again¡± and would ask the praise team to sing it for her when I visited her in the hospital. There were also moments where she would tear up at the thought of God¡¯s love and grace that he had poured into her life.

The greatest impression that I was given from Lucy at the time was when she spoke of the Korean community her family was serving. We all know to this day the extent the Mackenzie missionaries went to serve those in need. They were indeed a great blessing to our people, but Lucy was adamant that the time and opportunity she had to serve God in Korea was the greatest blessing for the Mackenzies themselves.

It only seems like yesterday that I met Lucy in Melbourne. In fact, it was two years ago that she was jumping with joy to hear that the Korean-Australian community would continue the leprosy mission. As joyous as our encounter was, words cannot express my sorrows to know that Lucy is no longer here with us.

However, I am grateful in thought that Lucy would have reunited with her family in God¡¯s Kingdom and is in peace living in the arms of God our Father.

See you soon Lucy. We will miss you. We pray that we will all meet again in heaven.

And to those here remembering Lucy today, I pray that God¡¯s grace and peace be with you.
Rev. Eric Choi
Chairperson of The Mackenzie Leprosy Mission in Australia
